Ashton Gibbard has been valuing properties in New Zealand since 2011 throughout the lower and central North Island and across the Northland Region. His expertise spans rating (roll maintenance and revaluations), financial reporting, national portfolio, private market and insurance valuations.
In his role as Associate Director, Ashton particularly enjoys being a ‘boots on the ground’ valuer and sharing his knowledge with graduates and other valuers in the team. He focuses on delivering quality outcomes to meet client expectations and timelines, while continuing to enhance the underlying datasets used to make informed valuation decisions.
The team’s rating work is significantly enhanced by Opteon’s investment in technology and its integration into the company’s systems, which Ashton rates as being “market-leading, as it provides a flexible system that enhances valuers’ productivity and has a valuer-orientated development schedule.”
Ashton found it easy to decide on his career path. He grew up on a lifestyle block and his father was a rural real estate agent. As he said: “working with numbers came naturally to me, so it really came down to whether I wanted to be a valuer or an accountant. The draw card of being able to be out inspecting properties tipped the scales to valuation”.
He originally studied in Palmerston North and became a property manager for a year after he graduated. Ashton then continued his career progression by moving to a nearby valuation firm and he went on to provide ratings, market and asset valuations in the Manawatu area for the next five years and was registered during that time. In 2016, he moved to Whangarei and continued his valuations work (including for Opteon from 2020). Ashton is also the Chairperson for the Northland Branch of the Property Institute.
Ashton thinks one of the best things about living and working in Whangarei is the stunning coastline. He makes the most of it by regularly fishing, free-diving for crayfish and spearfishing. The coastline also features many of the most spectacular homes Ashton has valued, including one notable property in the Bay of Islands that featured a vineyard, a wine barrel cellar, an observatory and a substantial dwelling of top-quality construction and fit-out.
